Healthy aging in retirement means taking care of our physical and psychological health the best we could. We hear a great deal about living a healthy lifestyle, but how can we go about doing this?

Quite understandably, some might be worried that their retirement income might not extend far enough to allow them to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. This is a myth. You don’t have to be wealthy to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. But you do need a little bit of patience and discipline to follow your health plans. Your progress might not be as quickly as you’d like but please be patient and persevere with this.

Physical Health

To enjoy healthy aging, it is important to keep good physical health.

* Daily exercises are crucial to good health. Regular physical activity of moderate intensity, such as brisk walking, can result in major health benefits.

* Maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Eat loads of fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

* Sleep is critical for healthy aging and the well-being of a person. A fantastic night’s sleep keeps your heart healthy and lowers your stress hormone levels.

* Quit Smoking. Everyone knows smoking is bad for our health. It increases the chance of developing serious illness and health issues.

* Excessive use of alcohol causes alcohol-related diseases (especially liver disease) and may be deadly. Drink sensibly during parties and prevent having a gigantic hangover the next day.

* Obesity affects the enjoyment of healthy aging. Obesity, if not properly handled, may result in a lot of health conditions that may later develop into life-threatening ailments.

* Take a short break away from the everyday routines. A new environment, seeing new things, trying out exotic foods, meeting new people, etc, will give your morale a significant boost.

Mental Health

Fantastic mental health is also critical to enjoying healthy aging.

* Daily meditation will help to calm the brain and reduces the anxiety level. Panic attacks are not as likely to occur as meditation lowers the amount of blood lactate.

We often hear that”laughter is the best medicine”. Share a joke with your loved ones and friends and have a great laugh. Laughing reduces blood pressure and reduces stress hormones.

* Helping others in need will help us forget our issues. By helping others, it gives us the confidence to handle our issues.

* Daily work out of the mind helps it to remain sharp. After reading your daily paper, try the cross-word mystery or sudoku sections.

* Go on the internet and play online games and quizzes. Play online memory games to improve memory.

* Playing darts or snooker with your buddies will help with mental arithmetic

* Other useful mental games include mahjong, chess, and bridge.

In case you’ve got health insurance, it’s sensible to examine its adequacy regularly.

Make an appointment with your physician for an annual medical checkup. A clean bill of health is excellent news.
