Whether you’re naturally pessimistic or simply facing an uncertain future because of the current economic climate, it’s worth developing the art of challenging your negative beliefs. We often wonder how I could be so optimistic 99 percent of the time. Despite appearances, there are lots of moments when it isn’t easy – because it makes a difference to my life and my business that I decide to work at it! Your mind has 50,000 thoughts per day. Select your thoughts wisely: you’re making your own life and your business with your thoughts!
Here are three tools I use for myself and with my small business coaching clients. If you want to see past the distress of the moment (or the hours or days) then take a few minutes to alter your perception and change your mindset!
This is important – there is no point asking’Why me’ or any variant thereof! Those kinds of’victim’ queries won’t move you forward. And there is no point feeling bad because of something that you can not change – that is wasting your energy! Look at using questions like:
Is this thought correct? Is this happening to everyone in my business or just me? What is it about this situation that’s in my power to change? If I alter my perspective will it help me find a solution or a breakthrough? How do I see this differently?
Does what I am worrying about really impact my everyday life or am I just worrying because the press says I need to? What would it take to make phenomenal opportunities for my business? Who can I associate with promotionally to make an excellent result for my business?
The more questions you’re inclined to ask, the more open you’ll be to viewing alternatives and opportunities that only a few moments ago you didn’t believe existed! How can it get any better than that?
If you’re in a black place (or going towards a red one!) Consider 3 positive actions that you can take which can help you feel as though you’re making progress towards your main challenge. Then take action!
By way of instance, I often bring in customers by attending networking events, so this week I booked myself to 3 events over the next few weeks. Psychologically this makes me feel great and it helps me stay in the mindset of attracting new customers. I’m not interested in engaging in a recession!
If you do not know what actions to take, define your challenge then give the problem to your subconscious. To prevent yourself worrying’ about finding the answer, begin feeding your subconscious with a few new experiences:
O Go for a walk somewhere different to your usual route.
O Browse websites from different industries to find out what new ideas they can provide you with.
o, Talk to a trusted business colleague or your small business coach.
O Read trend-focused websites like Springwise and TrendWatching
o Do something creative or repetitive – both keep you occupied whilst freeing up your subconscious (that is why you get great ideas in the shower!!).
O Attend a neighborhood small business seminar, hear a teleseminar or webinar online – thoughts come from several places.
O Find what you love and do it for a few hours – have some fun!
